I know some people become indignant about covers, and rant about how the original is always better and whatnot. It’s like the people who will never watch certain books made into movies. I agree that in most cases the original is better, and the book is better, but covers are not the end of the world, they can make an old favorite seem new again.
There are some covers I would love to hear.
I’ll start with Easy Star All Stars. For those of you who know them, they specialize in reggae style covers of some classic albums. They covered Dark Side of the Moon, Radiohead, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Michael Jackson to name a few. These aren’t careless covers, and sloppy reggae. They get down to the details and mathematical intricacies in the music. I think they are stellar in their work. I would love to hear them cover the whole Lateralus album by TOOL.
Tori Amos. Tori Amos has a huge, massive body of work. I’d say I only like 50% of it, but that is still a lot of Tori considering how much Tori there is. I know there are rabid Tori fans out there that call themselves Toriphiles….Back off guys, I support her, and respect her as a musician. She has talent, it’s just not talent I always feel like listening to. I do think she shines in her covers though. She channels the musician, or the song, or both in some cases. I would love to hear her cover White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. Who else could tap into Grace Slick the same way most of us know Tori Amos would be able to?
Adele. I think Adele should cover Baby Will Raam from Rusted Root. I think it would be a bit out of her stylistic comfort zone, but I think her voice could compliment that song in a completely new way.
Bob Dylan. Ok, I know Dylan doesn’t need to waste his time covering much, but I think his raspy voice would make me love Townes Van Zandt even more (if that is possible). I would go with Katie Belle Blues or To Live is to Fly, but really…I just think Dylan should pick a few Townes songs and pay Townes the ultimate homage.
Lorde. I think Lorde has a bit of Fiona Apple in her, and would love to hear her cover Criminal. There really isn’t much explaining that I have for that, I would just love to hear it happen.
Let's hear it readers. What are some of your fantasy covers? Any genre goes, any song, album or artist.
